A strong serve doesn't just start the point — it dictates the rally. Here are five tips our coaching team swears by.
1. Master Your Grip
Use a continental grip (like you're shaking hands with the paddle). This neutral grip gives you the most versatility for spin and placement without needing to switch mid-rally.
2. Focus on Consistency Over Power
A serve that lands in play every time is more valuable than a rocket that misses 40% of the time. Start with a compact motion and build power gradually as your consistency improves.
3. Use Your Whole Body
Don't just arm the ball over. Engage your legs, core, and shoulder rotation. The power comes from the ground up — bend your knees, rotate your hips, and let the paddle follow through naturally.
4. Vary Your Placement
Mix up your serves — deep to the baseline, short to the kitchen line, wide to the forehand or backhand. Keeping your opponent guessing is half the battle.
5. Practice with Purpose
Don't just hit 50 serves randomly. Set targets on the court. Aim for specific zones. Track your accuracy. Deliberate practice beats mindless repetition every time.
